xAPI Query Language Demo at ADL's TLA Meeting

Rob Chadwick of Veracity will lead a discussion and demo on Veracity's new xAPI Query Language at the ADL TLA Working Group this Thursday, February 20th, at 10:00am EST.

Something we don’t always talk much about is how to get data out of an LRS. One of the major differences between SCORM and xAPI is that xAPI specifies a mechanism for retrieving historical data. This allows a user of any conformant LRS product to export their data, preventing "vendor lock-in" and expanding the utility and reusability of said data. In the first half of this discussion, Rob will recap how data queries are implemented in the specification, and why it might not be quite adequate for data analytics purposes. In the second half, Rob will discuss the sorts of data problems we face here at Veracity. We do an enormous amount of data capture and analysis, and we’ve found existing options wanting, so we developed an in house data analysis language for working with xAPI statements. We’re tentatively calling the language VQL (Veracity Query Language). This language is database agnostic, expressive yet simple, and includes some elements designed specifically to support xAPI. Rob will talk about how the language is designed, why we use it, and how our analysis engine turns queries into results.
